It is generally considered that to be honoured with the privilege of judging your main breed at Crufts is the pinnacle of a judging career and this was certainly true in my case. I was conscious of the air of excitement and anticipation around the ringside throughout the day.
May I thank all the exhibitors for the wonderful figure of 246 entries. I had been informed in writing that I was expected to judge at a rate of 30 exhibits an hour and be completed by 5pm. No mean task but with the help of my two experienced stewards, Peter Sewell and Barbara Bliss, and a very short lunch break, we managed to finish within a few minutes of the target time. As you all know on the final day all times are determined by live TV.

I was pleasantly surprised at the overall quality of the entry, temperaments were excellent and with the exception of half a dozen exhibits all were presented in good coat condition. Most were in hard condition but their were several which lacked muscle tone. I have to again express concern at the lack ofangulation of the upper arm and I came across a few which were positively straight which precludes them from having any forechest or forward reach. There were also several gay tails on the move especially in the earlier male classes.
Throughout the day I was looking for Dalmatians which were balanced with clean lines , strong and having good muscle tone, and being capable of doing the job they were originally bred for.
I certainly found this in abundance in the final challenge. The dog is magnificent. From head to feet he has all the qualities one would wish to find in a Dalmatian and so professionally handled. The bitch is so soundly constructed which is reflected in her fluent rhythmic action.
I believe that those fortunate to be at the ringside at the challenge witnessed two of the most outstanding examples of the breed in the world today.
There was absolutely nothing to choose between the two of them and it was not until the very final circuit of the ring that the bitch tipped the scales.
In the Group both the bitch and the handler put on a magnificent performance and I was delighted for the breed that they were short listed in the last 8.
